'I am interested in how Beethoven's music can surprise us today. Our interpretation should feel to the audience as if they are hearing this music for the first . That is my goal' - Yannick Nezet-Seguin. Originally planned for April 2020 in celebration of Beethoven's 250th birthday, the project 'Beethoven: The Symphonies' is the third composer-led collaboration between Grammy-Winner Yannick Nezet-Seguin and the COE having previously performed and recorded together complete Schumann and Mendelssohn cycles in 2014 and 2017 respectively. The Symphony Cycle was going to use the now complete performance material featuring the musical text of the 'New Beethoven Complete Edition'. Especially in Symphony No. 9 one can literally hear and experience the difference, as Beethoven's original and recently re-discovered Double Bassoon part is used for the very first . The recording will also be the COE's first complete Beethoven Cycle on record since the landmark disc with Nikolaus Harnoncourt in the 1990's.

The scores of Beethoven's nine symphonies have long been the subject of attentive care by conductors and musicologists. Together, they published "original editions" correcting faulty editions accumulating errors following the inattention of the first editors and the misinterpretations of the somes indecipherable manuscripts. They went back to the sources with the help in particular of the scores used at the of their creation.

In 1982, the conductor Igor Markevich had already published a rigorous and documented edition at the head of a team of seasoned musicologists, then it was the turn of Norman Del Mar to conduct a new edition at Barenreiter in 1997. Immediately recorded by David Zinman at the head of the Tonhalle Orchestra in Zurich, this integral of great musical value unfortunately passed almost unnoticed alongside the new "historically informed" versions which were then on the rise.

It is now Yannick Nezet-Seguin's turn to offer Deutsche Grammophon a complete version based on a brand new critical edition, the "New Beethoven Complete Edition", in which we find minute details of articulation and expression. What ultimately counts in this new recording, made during four concerts given in July 2021 with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, is the historical position of a very gifted young conductor who has perfectly assimilated the modes of games and style rediscovered by his elders, in particular Nikolaus Harnoncourt, whose complete work at the head of this same orchestra caused a sensation when it was released in 1990 (Teldec).

Less radical than his predecessors, Harnoncourt, Bruggen or Norrington, the young Canadian conductor seeks above all to underline "the way in which the music of Beethoven can surprise us today. "His tempos are often lively, the joints protruding, without emphasis or oversized ego. It is a playful, humble and lively approach that gives Beethoven all its burning relevance with a classicism from which all eccentricity is banished.
