VA - Dave Hamilton's Detroit Funk: Rare And Unreleased Twisted Funk 1967-1975 (2008)
FLAC (tracks) | Funk, Soul | 1h 5 min | 206 MB

This compilation is another feast for soul and funk fans, offering 20 rare treats that were recorded on various minor Detroit labels in the late 1960s through the mid-1970s. Dave Hamilton, who was briefly a songwriter at Motown (and co-wrote a few songs with Marvin Gaye) gets top billing on the CD, owing to the fact that he was the label owner, songwriter, produce for these songs, and even the recording artist on three tracks.

One passage in the liner notes calls this music "an unmissable feast of great Detroit funk," and that's pretty much accurate. One or two tracks might even qualify as novelty records due to their eccentric presentation, but for the most part the songs on here are hard-driving soul and funk showcases, with some occasional jazzy instrumental touches. Billy Garner, a fantastically funky artist who could have given James Brown a run for his money (and who has turned up on other BGP compilations) stars in this one too with 5 tracks (although 4 of those are single songs divided into Part 1 and Part 2 tracks). Garner is another one of the "mystery" artists of which little is known, and his recording output was limited to a handful of singles.

Other highlights on this CD include two tracks by the great O.C. Tolbert (if you like those, check out the CD compilation of his own songs that's now available), and tracks by James Carpenter and Gip Roberts. The very last trick, Dave Hamilton's "The Deacons", is described in the liner notes as "a total mystery ... the twin lead vocals and the jazzy arrangement make it sound like a Charles Stepney arrangement for the Rotary Connection, and if that's Dave's guitar, he deserves an extra bow."

And the compilers of this CD also deserve a bow themselves, having had to plough through Hamilton's copious but disorganized archives of old tapes to find enough "funk" tracks for this collection. But the effort was worth it. Fans of this magical era of music will find some soulful delights on this CD.
