"Lovers Rock" is considered the first British reggae sub-genre to enjoy supranational success. Influenced by the Jamaican sound, Lovers Rock became the predominant genre of the UK scene in the mid-seventies until the late eighties
Developed as a counter-movement to the more militant style of roots reggae, Lovers Rock was influenced mainly by American R&B and the soulful soul of the Jamaican rock steady sound of the sixties. Despite the style achieving mainstream success with a number of major UK chart hits, mainstream media first became aware of the genre after the introduction of Steve McQueen's award-winning 2020 BBC TV series "Small Axe", in which an episode was devoted to Lovers Rock and its influence on British culture. Since then, international interest in the genre has been growing and now this compilation is released as a double LP and triple CD
Featuring the genre's most popular and influential recordings, the album includes the work of legendary British artists such as Janet Kay, Carrol Thompson,Louisa Mark, as well as established Jamaican reggae legends Gregory Isaacs, Dennis Brown, John Holt and Sugar Minott
