Never two without three. With this release on the Deutsche Grammophon label, Sir John Eliot Gardiner offers his third recording of Johann Sebastian Bach's St. John Passion, thirty-five years after his first attempt for Archiv Produktion (1985) and ten years after his fabulous version published on his label Soli Deo Gloria (2011). Here, he definitively affirms his choice. Even more than in the St. Matthew Passion, the drama remains entirely on the side of the choir.
And what a choir again!, the Monteverdi Choir reveals a dramatic presence as suffocating as it is breathtaking. Of an impressive majesty, the chorales come alive in a gesture guided by a perfect legibility of the polyphonic textures; the beauty of the lines, the subtlety of the nuances, the diversity of the inflections of the German verb force admiration - for example Wer hat dich so geschlagen (No. 11) is captured in all its expressive truth. Later, at the heart of the judgment (Und die Kriegsknechte flochten eine Krone von Dornen, Die Juden aber schrieen und sprachen), the choir will sharpen its irons, sharpen its spears with breathtaking power. All of the sacred drama appears, here, grandiose, majestic, immense, somes even not without some hints of playfulness (Mein teurer Heiland, lass dich fragen).
And then come the last two numbers, even more magical. Ruht wohl, ihr heiligen Gebeine, thought slow, without excessive support, with transparent textures, dazzles above all by the flexibility of its curves. What comforting poetry! Much to our delight, Gardiner stretches it here to almost eight minutes. And the ultimate chorale Ach Herr, laß dein lieb Engelein Gardiner reproduces the imperious gesture of his introductory chorus; it will also be the great cry of Christianity, that which can live on the tender and redemptive love that Christ lavishes.
So, faced with such beauties, those of Bach's music already, which here seems even more inexhaustible, and those dispensed by the Monteverdi Choir which will have hardly any difficulty with this publication config its legendary status, the disappointments - voices soloists not very expressive, starting with the Evangelist, timbres often unremarkable apart from that of the soprano, which is quite brilliant - will ultimately appear unimportant. Everything here is to the glory of the Choir.
