The rediscovery of Quebec's classical musical heritage is underway! André Mathieu's was the trigger (thanks to Alain Lefèvre, and to the others who followed in his footsteps!), Certainly. However, if the album Auguste Descarries (1896-1956): chamber music and melodies, with baritone Pierre Rancourt and the Hochelaga Trio, is an indicator of it (and I believe it is one!), Classical music Quebecer not affiliated with the avant-garde is at the dawn of a great and very exciting renaissance.

Descarries' music is a happy marriage of various influences. We feel that of French music first, with echoes of Fauré and Reynaldo Hahn for the melancholic atmosphere and the colors of the piano. We are also with Rachmaninov, Glazunov and Catoire, with whom Descarries studied, because we recognize the strength of the emotional impulses as well as the frankness and the lyricism of the melodies of the Russians. Finally, Quebec folklore, for the refined arrangements of popular local songs, completes the sound portrait of this attractive universe.
In this music rooted in the great European classical know-how, but well informed of the accents of the local terroir, landscapes emerge and blend naturally with the decor evoked by the first national literature of Quebec, contemporary of Descarries, it is that is to say that of Germaine Guèvremont, Gabrielle Roy or Claude-Henri Gon. I effortlessly imagine a recital combining Descarries' repertoire with readings from texts by these literary artists.

Long considered a negligible quantity, the quality classical Quebec music of the 20th century, of which that of Auguste Descarries is a perfect example, is no doubt when talented, methodical artists with serious involvement, give it life. of life that she needs.

Pierre Rancourt is a young baritone who left the Atelier lyrique de l'Opéra de Montréal just a few years ago and has an interest in Quebec music. That of Descarries is particularly dear to him since he won, in 2015, the first prize in the melody competition of the Association for the dissation of music by Auguste Descarries. His warm tone, his natural phrasing, the treasures of nuances that he prints on this music as well as his impeccable diction make us dream that one day Descarries' work will be able to be interpreted in European recitals alongside other great composers. French melodies ("songs" written for lyric artists) from the 19th and 20th centuries!

The Hochelaga Trio, made up of Anne Robert on the violin, Dominique Beauséjour-Ostiguy on the cello and Jimmy Brière on the piano, is distinguished by its rich and sumptuous sound, almost opulent, like a garnet red velvet. It's ideal for this music, somes deliciously old-fashioned, but always a source of pride and sincere pleasure.

The program is divided into two categories: pieces for voice (9 in total) and instrumental chamber music (12 pieces). I can't comment on each song, but to be caught by Descarries' talent, start with the last track of the album, Quartet for violin, viola, cello and piano, a tour de force of expression and emotions that leads into an exciting musical whirlwind! An authentic masterpiece, no matter who and when it was written!

Auguste Descarries
In addition to having studied with several important European composers of the bning of the 20th century, Descarries was a pupil of Rodolphe Mathieu, father of André! He then won the Prix d'Europe in 1921, just before settling on the Old Continent for eight years. After returning to Montreal, he taught at the Conservatoire and the University of Montreal. He ended his career by being appointed vice-dean of the Faculty of Music in 1951.
